MOMENTS IN TIME
This body of work is characterised by multi faceted, angular semi abstract human and animal forms. Chandler’s work focuses on the most dramatic point of an action, physical or mental, capturing these tipping points and transitions in his sculptures, he strives to communicate the perfection of his subjects and in so doing processes his own debilitating chronic illness. The constructed poses are held for fractions of seconds, this tension is more often felt than seen. Not only are these moments of power transitory but the career spans of the elite athletes/dancers which inspire the work are also fleeting, the human condition trends in one direction, to eventual demise. In this body of work the pieces are all prefixed with "Poise and", when spoken, this sounds like poisoned, adding to the rhetoric that health is fleeting and revealing that veneration of these athletes is a classic example of the grass appearing greener on the other side.
Chandler's techniques are unusual, fabrications from wooden panels and sand-able resin, form crisp edged, smooth faced, multi faceted sculptures that define his motif. This has led to recognition in the art world. Since 2018 Chandler has focused mainly on large public works of art, these pieces can now be seen in towns and cities across the UK.
